Peter Ronald deSouza
Peter Ronald deSouza is a professor at CSDS and holds the Dr S.Radhakrishnan Chair of Rajya Sabha till April 2017. He was director of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), Shimla, where he served two terms from 2007 till 2013. He then, as Interim director, set up the International Center for Human Development (IC4HD) between 2013-14. He was co-director of the Lokniti Programme at CSDS till 2007 and was at the Goa University department of Political Science from 1987-2003.
He works on issues of democratic politics and in the comparative politics of South Asia. Favouring an eclectic approach to unpacking the problems of politics he searches for the ‘inconvenient fact’ that troubles established ways of talking about the politics of India. He has worked on a range of themes from Panchayati Raj, to trust and political institutions, to dalits and discrimination, to the uniform civil code in India. In addition to numerous articles he has edited four books, Contemporary India: Transitions (Sage, 2000), India’s Political Parties (with E. Sridharan, Sage, 2006), Indian Youth in a Transforming World: Attitudes and Perceptions, (with Sanjay Kumar and Sandeep Shastri, Sage 2009) and Speaking of Gandhi’s Death (with Tridip Suhrud, Orient Blackswan 2010). He was one of the three principal investigators of a five nation study on the State of Democracy in South Asia (2006). He has served as an expert and consultant for the UNDP, World Bank, ICNRD, International IDEA, Ford Foundation and Inter Parliamentary Union. He is also a regular columnist for The Hindu, The Tribune and Outlook.
As a political theorist his abiding interest is in threats to freedom of expression in democratic polities, particularly on the issue of the threshold of offence, and on the question of righting historical wrongs.

Prof. T. T. Ram Mohan
Prof. Ram Mohan worked extensively in consultancy and in the financial sector before entering academics. He has been Divisional Manager with Tata Economic Consultancy Services, where he advised firms in the private sector on expansion, diversification and market entry strategies, and carried out policy studies for government and international agencies, including the World Bank, CIDA and the Ministry of Industry, Government of India. He has carried out consulting assignments in India as well as in the Gulf and the Middle East.
Moving subsequently into the financial sector, he worked as Head of Strategic Development at Standard Chartered Bank, where he helped formulate a long-term strategy for the bank’s operations in India. As Vice President, Bear Stearns Asia Ltd (Hong Kong), and later as Head of Research at Birla Marlin Securities Ltd, he was responsible for producing equity research on Indian companies and in drawing up market investment strategy.
At various points in time, Prof. Ram Mohan has been a financial journalist. He was New York Correspondent for The Economic Times, in which capacity he covered major world events such as the IMF-World Bank meet in Washington and the GATT round discussions in Montreal. He has also been Economics Correspondent for India Abroad (New York), and Contributing Editor (South Asia) with the Financial Times of London’s International Reports. For the past five years, he has been writing a fortnightly column for The Economic Times. He has been quoted and interviewed on current economic affairs in the press.
Prof. Ram Mohan specialises in the financial sector. His current research interests include banking sector reforms, privatization and corporate governance. He has run training programmes for bank executives and given talks on issues in the Indian banking sector at various for a. He was Visiting Faculty at Stern School of Business, NYU in the summer of 2001. In June 2002, he was appointed Member, Technical Advisory Committee on Money and Government Securities Markets, Reserve Bank of India.

Shri Nikhil Kumar Jain has done his B.E. (Industrial Engineering) from IIT Roorkee in 1985 and LL.B from Delhi University in 2010. He joined the Indian Railways as an Indian Railways Personnel Services Officer in 1988 through Civil Service Exam of 1986 batch. He has worked at different levels in the Railways and as GGM HR in the IRCTC and as Executive Director (Joint Secretary) in the Ministry of Railways. At present he is working in the capacity of Director Personnel (Board Member) of Air India Ltd. since 2012.

René (M.) B.M. de Koster
René (M.) B.M. de Koster is a professor of Logistics and Operations Management at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University since 1995. He also is “Port Professor” on behalf of SmartPort and founder of the Material Handling Forum. He holds a PhD from Eindhoven University of Technology (1988). Currently he holds guest lecturing positions at 4 other universities. His research interests are warehousing, material handling, behavioural operations, city distribution, and retail operations. He is author / editor of 8 books and over 140 papers in books and academic journals. He is on the editorial boards of 11 journals.
Ramesh Subramoniam is a Managing Director in FTI’s Performance Improvement practice and is based in Dallas. He is responsible for the implementation of performance improvement and enterprise value realization engagements. Prior to FTI Consulting, he served as the Associate Director of Reverse Supply Chain Repair Operations for Verizon. Earlier in his career, he served as the Supply Chain Head for the Industrial Category at Amazon.com, and as a divisional lean change agent and led the global aftermarket program management office for Delphi Corporation. He holds a PhD in strategic planning for remanufacturing from Erasmus University, Rotterdam
Rajiv Mongia is the director of Green Earth Translogistics Pvt. Ltd., which he co-founded in 2009. Green Earth has a revenues of near INR 40.0 Crore with fleet strength of 150+ Commercial Vehicles. They primarily works with clients in the Oil Industry where safety is accorded the highest priority. His areas of Interest include logistics management, operations and supply chain management, procurement and trading and road safety.
K. Shanker a professional with an experience of 25 years in sales, Marketing , Logistics and safety. His contributions in the sphere of road safety within his operations and beyond at BP is well recognized. His efforts in standardization of process, in training and development, Route assessment and planning, application of technology and improving the vehicle standards is widely acknowledged.
The symposium on “Relevance of Statistical Methods in Modern Governance” presents some prominent faces who produce, disseminate and use Indian official data, and, directly or indirectly, influence policy making at various levels in Dr. RB Barman, Chairman of the National Statistical Commission, Prof. Shubhabrata Das, Professor, IIMB and Prof. Jayanth R Varma, Professor, IIMA. The three speakers at the symposium will explore the issues in governance that use of empirical support. The symposium will bring together some of the challenges faced by the government in collecting, summarising, disseminating and analysing data, as well as the challenges faced by researchers in procuring and working with such data.
The symposium will be chaired by Prof. Abhiman Das, RBI Professor, IIMA.
Dr. Radhabinod Barman is the Chairman, National Statistical Commission enjoying the status of Minister of State, Government of India. Dr. Barman is a Former Executive Director of Reserve Bank of India, Former President, The Indian Econometric Society, Vice Chairman, Irving Fisher Committee on Central Bank Statistics, BIS, Switzerland. His areas of interest include Applied Econometrics, Payment System and Business IT.
Dr. Barman has a Ph. D. in Economics from IIT-Bombay and a Master’s degree in Statistics from Gauhati University. He was a member of the Indian Statistical Services before joining RBI in 1979.
Prof. Shubhabrata Das received his B.Stat (1987) and M.Stat (1989) degrees from the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta, and obtained his M.S. and Ph.D. (1993) degrees in Statistics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). He has held visiting faculty positions at various institutes/universities of international repute, including ESSEC Business School, Indian Statistical Institute Calcutta, University of Nebraska.
His major research domain is in Statistical methods, Market Research, Actuarial Mathematics and Operations Research. Specific topics of interests include Multivariate Statistics, Statistical analysis of fuzzy data, Sports Analytics, Business Forecasting, Measurement and Scaling and Discrete optimisation problems.
Prof Das has published several papers in the refereed journals of international repute. Prof. Das is a co-author of a book titled ‘Facing the Future: Indian Pension Systems’. He is also the co-author of the chapter on canonical correlations in the Encyclopedia of Biostatistics. Besides these, he has published several technical reports and delivered seminars at various international conferences.
Prof. Das engages in training and other consultancy services in the domain of Business Statistics, Business analytics, Advanced Market Research, Business Forecasting and Insurance with various prominent companies in the country.
At IIMB, besides teaching the core courses on Statistics for the Post-graduate programs, doctoral programme and various executive education programs, he offers elective courses on Business Forecasting, Sports analytics, Insurance analytics and Actuarial Mathematics.
Prof. Das has been Research Chair Professor at IIMB. He was also a part of the IIMB faculty team that received IBM Faculty award. He also received best paper award in the 7th APRIA for work on Joint life Insurance Policy with differential benefit and premium. He is one of twenty faculty members spread across four continents and twelve academic institutions of international repute that is recipient of a big four-year (2013-16) grant facilitating collaborating research on Risk analysis, Ruin and Extremes, awarded by the European Commission.
Jayanth R Varma
Prof. Jayanth Varma did his post-graduation in management from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA), where he was awarded a Gold Medal for scholastic performance. Subsequently, he obtained his doctorate in management from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. He is also a qualified cost accountant.
He is currently a Professor in the Finance and Accounting Area at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad where he teaches courses in capital markets, fixed income, alternative investments, risk management and corporate finance. He has been the Dean of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad for three years.
Prof. Varma was a full time Member of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for a year. Before that, he was a part time member of SEBI for three years. He has been the Chairman of the Secondary Markets Advisory Committee and several other committees of SEBI. He has also been Chairman of several committees set up by the Forward Markets Commission and the Ministry of Finance and Company Affairs. Prof. Varma was a member of the Raghuram Rajan Committee on Financial Sector Reforms and of the Financial Sector Legislative Reforms Commission.
Prof. Varma is currently a director on the Board of Infosys BPO Limited and Gujarat International Finance Tec-City Company Limited. He has also been a Director on the Board of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, Axis Bank Limited and of Punjab National Bank. He has also worked for a year with a large financial services company as an Executive Director in charge of Investments and Research for their mutual fund. Before joining the faculty of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, he worked for three years as Senior Consultant at a leading firm of management consultants and chartered accountants.
Prof. Varma has carried out extensive research in the field of Indian financial markets and finance theory and published extensively in Indian and international journals. He has authored extremely popular books on portfolio management and on the Indian securities scam. His book on the securities scam was a national best seller. Prof. Varma has more than a hundred papers and cases to his credit; in addition, he has published more than a hundred articles in newspapers and other periodicals.
He has carried out consulting assignments for several government, multilateral and private sector organizations in a wide range of areas including financing choices, risk management, management information and control systems, and corporate strategy.
Prof. Varma’s current research interests are principally in the area of financial markets including equity, debt, currency and derivative markets. He is also interested in broader issues related to the financial sector as also in mathematical modelling and computer simulation.
He is a legal counsel at J. Sagar Associates, Chennai. He focuses on infrastructure, covering legal due diligence and advising the investors and the Government on PPP policy, law, regulation and project contracts.
He was earlier Senior Director, Project Finance at Infrastructure Development Finance Company Limited (IDFC) and was in infrastructure credit ratings and advisory at ICRA. He has been part of the Planning Commission Working Groups on infrastructure and has also worked with the Disinvestment Commission, the World Bank and multilateral bodies on equity investments in infrastructure.
He is a media columnist and has been invited to address students, investors and senior bureaucrats on infrastructure, project finance and PPP by ADB, World Bank, Government of UK, Confederation of Indian Industries, National law Colleges, IIMs and Lal Bahadur Shastri Academy, Mussorie.
He is a cost accountant, MBA and lawyer by training and has twenty eight years of experience in the field of infrastructure.
He is Group HR Director and Whole Time Director (WTD), Adani Ports and SEZ Limited (APSEZ), Adani Group, Ahmedabad. He has been working with the Adani Group since 1992 and is involved in Ports & Logistics, Railways, Healthcare & Medical Education, Infrastructure Engineering & Management Education and Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives of the group.

He is Professor and Chairperson at the Public Systems Group Area, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA). He specializes in infrastructure and transport systems, and logistics and supply chain management. He conducts research on the railway, port, shipping, aviation and road sectors.
He has published over 35 refereed papers in journals and written over 155 case studies. He has published six co-authored books. He is a Fellow of the Operational Research Society of India, and Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. He has teaching experience at universities in India, USA, Canada, Yugoslavia, Singapore, Tanzania and UAE.
He is a member of the Global Future Council on Mobility of the World Economic Forum, Executive Council of the National Aviation University, and of the Board of Directors of six companies in the fields of infrastructure, logistics and education. Overall, he has been on the Board of 12 companies.
He has served on various government policy making and advisory committees for the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution, Ministry of Railways, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Ministry of Shipping, Cabinet Secretariat, Comptroller and Auditor General, the Planning Commission and various State Governments. He has also served as the Vice-Chancellor of the Indian Maritime University from July 2012 to March 2013.

Satyam Shivam Sundaram
He is Director, Government & Transaction Advisory Services at Ernst & Young LLP (EY), New Delhi. His current responsibilities include policy and investment advisory to Government clients across sectors. Prior to EY, he has worked with Indian Institute of Management, Indore (Assistant Professor, Finance & Accounting Area), IL&FS Infrastructure Development Corporation, and L&T Ramboll Consulting Engineers Ltd, Chennai. He has also been a guest facility at various institutions for MBA and doctoral programs.
He has published/co-authored articles in publications like Economic and Political Weekly (EPW), India Infrastructure Report, Vikalpa, Indian Highways, and Engineering Earth and has also co-authored several cases, working papers and conference papers.
He received Fellow of IIM Ahmedabad in 2009. He holds M. Tech (Infrastructural Civil Engineering) and B. Tech (Civil Engineering) degrees from IIT Madras. He also holds a LL.B degree.
